KNYSNA NEWS - While Knysna still waits with bated breath for a decision to be made on the future of the Outeniqua Choo Choo, a collective of engineers have come up with some temporary relief for train lovers.
Two decades ago, the Society of Model Engineers (Steam Trains) was formed in Knysna, and comprised of a group of retired engineers all with a common interest in locomotives and building miniature trains.
It was founded by Ron Etter and the society had premises at Ridge Road in Paradise – where it was open to the public who was welcome to enjoy train rides around a track.
But the premises were totally destroyed in the June 2017 fires. Fortunately, none of the engines was damaged as these are stored in another warehouse which was spared by the fires.
Now, more than a year later, the society is picking up the pieces of their once-proud establishment and are planning to reopen within the next three months – at a new venue and stronger than ever.
"The new venue is located next to Totties Restaurant in Rheenendal," says Len Dabner, one of the members of the society. He says that for the past year the track has been repaired and relocated to the new location.
"A group of volunteers have been assisting with the relocation of the damaged railway line and the repair of the sleepers. The new location will offer something for the whole family. We are a nonprofit organisation – we do this purely for our own enjoyment and fulfilment," he says.

Despite the setback of the fires, Dabner says the society is confident that the new premises, for which they signed a 10-year lease, will be an attraction to the area and will serve the entire community with wholesome fun.
"We have different miniature locomotives, and the public is welcome to go for a ride, enjoy the day and grab a bite to eat at the restaurant."
More information on the opening will be disclosed around March or April 2019.
