KNYSNA NEWS - Police in Knysna are investigating a case of murder after a man was killed in an alleged act of mob justice in the Dinangwe area of Concordia on Sunday 5 December.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie, preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased, Lwando Tsiyetsi, was "beaten to death by members of the local community on allegations that he was found inside a house of another lady whom he allegedly wanted to rape".
Pojie clarified that these allegations were made by the community.
"It is further alleged that the lady was being accompanied by people who were walking with her from the tavern which they were coming from," Pojie explained. "It is believed that the deceased was captured and beaten by community members as they found him fighting with the lady."
Pojie said police and forensic services were dispatched to comb the scene for evidence.
"A number of community members have already been implicated through our investigation. The docket will be submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision as soon as investigation into this matter has been finalised," he said.
He issued a call for the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to allow for justice to follow its course.
"Interfering in the judicial process does not only jeopardise the positive outcome of the investigation, but threatens the overall safety of the community and turns members of the community into criminals," he said. "Rather join hands with the authority/police and provide valuable information to the investigating teams to enable successful prosecution at the end."
No arrests have been made yet.
