KNYSNA NEWS - A 32-year-old man, Thembekile Sinxonxo, died when his house burnt down in Kanonkop, Concordia on Sunday night.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said Knysna police have opened an inquest docket.
"Information available indicates that police responded to a scene at about 00:05 on Monday, 19 April. On arrival they discovered human remains, believed to be that of the occupant, underneath debris. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the investigation continues," he said.
A friend of the deceased, Mvuzo Madikane, said he was with Sinxonxo all day on Sunday and they parted after 21:00.
"Sinxonxo left me and said his goodbyes. "While we were still chatting with a group of friends he came back again to come and chat to us. I then said we must go to sleep and that was the last time I saw him alive," he said. "I am still shocked by what happened. This was quick and I still can't believe it."
While he was asleep in his house he heard people calling him saying Sinxonxo's house was on fire.
"When I arrived there, people told me that he had died and soon after me the firefighters arrived. This is strange and I still can't believe it today. Sinxonxo died trying to open the burglar bars. He fought for his life until he died fighting," Madikane said.
He said they do not know what caused the fire. "We are shocked that his RDP house made of bricks could burn like a shack," he said.
