PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The Bitou Municipality's electrical department recently embarked on a process to retrofit existing street lights with more energy-efficient street lights.
This project, known as the Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM), aims to introduce energy-efficient solutions to municipalities to reduce electricity consumption.
SNR Electrical, the contractor appointed to implement the project, is set to roll out the street lights in the different areas over three months.
They started with the roll-out on the N2 a number of weeks ago and on 20 January they began retrofitting the streetlights in Kwanokuthula.
"Although the N2 is done, unfortunately the walkways on the N2 cannot switch on," municipal spokesman Andile Namntu said.
"This is because some of the cables were stolen. Cable theft should be condemned and stopped.
"The Bitou communications team will give regular feedback as this project is being rolled out in the different communities."
Energy-efficient bulbs are being fitted to Bitou streetlamps.
