PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Radio station owner Sibongile 'Sbosh' Tom has launched a new community arts development programme, Artbridge, that he says is an important step in building a strong, inclusive and sustainable local creative sector.
Tom, who runs the online community station Radio204 Likhaya, says the programme is very close to his heart, as it will give many people the opportunity to do what they love and turn their passion into income-generating work.
"Bitou has a vast pool of talent, and at times I truly believe we can compete both nationally and internationally. The idea of intentionally developing the arts in Bitou was born in 2022, while I was engaging with local artists through my online radio station," said Tom.
There are big plans - not only for Bitou, but for the entire Garden Route. However, this pilot programme will focus specifically on Bitou.
Artbridge is a long-term initiative designed to discover, support and develop performing artists from school level to professional and veteran practitioners.
Pipeline of talent
The programme aims to use arts and culture as tools for youth development, skills training, social cohesion and job creation.
"Our vision is to build a pipeline of talent from classrooms to stages, and from passion to profession," said Tom.
In addition to school-based programmes such as Creative Friday, Artbridge will offer artist development and incubation programmes, mentorship by experienced artists, performance platforms and festivals, digital and media skills training, creative entrepreneurship support, and heritage and cultural revival projects.
Equipping artists
"Through mentorship, skills development, access to rehearsal spaces, live performance opportunities, brand development, and digital skills training, Artbridge endeavours to equip artists with the tools they need to succeed in the modern creative economy," Tom said. "The programme also creates safe and accessible spaces where artists can develop their craft, collaborate, gain exposure, and connect with audiences."
Artists who join Artbridge will gain access to performance opportunities, training, networking, and development platforms throughout the year.
