KNYSNA NEWS - Ruan Share (12), a learner at Knysna Primary School, recently made the South African team in both the biathle and the triathle events, and will now compete in the 2024 Biathle-Triathle World Championships in Egypt from October 10-13.
Biathle is running and swimming combined in one event, and triathle is running, shooting with a laser simulator and swimming in one event. Typically part of the events takes place on a mixed running course of sand, grass and asphalt.
Ruan's mother, Yvette Share, proudly shares that her son improved the triathle record by a whopping nine seconds.
"Ruan has been a very sporty child since early childhood and it is not surprising to me that he excels quite well in any sport he takes up.
"Myself, I like being active, and we jog together every morning. I am also his coach and this is also usually the time we'll talk about certain aspects he can improve in and exactly how we're going to manage it.
"It also helps that he has a fairly strong mental attitude and doesn't just lie down if he doesn't perform the way he knows he can.
Straight out of the water and into his running routine.
"A typical day in his life involves morning jogging, school, rugby and then tennis - in that order. After that, it's time for homework because he's also doing well academically," she says.
Ruan gained SWD colours for both tennis and rugby.
To cover Ruan's costs for his trip to Egypt, his parents are hosting a Spring Dance function on Friday 30 August at Knysna Primary School. There will also be a raffle, with a whole lamb up for grabs.
