KNYSNA NEWS - The 5km CANSA Walk/Run emerged as one of the most heartfelt highlights of day three of the 2026 Knysna Oyster Festival on Sunday 5 July, drawing hundreds of participants dressed in pink to stand together against cancer.
While the morning was filled with colourful tutus, music, laughter and a festive atmosphere, organisers and participants agreed the event represented something far greater than a walk.
Many of those taking part carried deeply personal reasons for joining. Some celebrated surviving cancer, others walked alongside loved ones still battling the disease, while many honoured family members and friends who had lost their fight.
Among those instrumental in promoting the campaign was Mandy Pofadder, founder of RAP, together with her dedicated team, who encouraged widespread community participation in support of CANSA's work.
Reflecting on the morning, Pofadder said that as participants gathered at the start before the 9am walk, it became clear that every person in the crowd had a story.
“At first glance it looks like a fun morning filled with colourful tutus, pink accessories, laughter, music and friends enjoying the day together. But when you look a little deeper, you realise every person who joins a CANSA walk has a story,” she said.
She added that every step represented strength, courage, hope and remembrance.
“When we all started walking together, we weren't just taking part in an event. We became a community of people carrying different burdens but sharing the same hope. Every step was a silent prayer, every smile hid a story, and every pink ribbon represented courage.”
Pofadder said cancer continues to affect families across every community and reminded participants that compassion knows no boundaries.
“Today we walked for those who couldn't. We walked with those who are still fighting. We walked because hope is stronger when it is shared.”
The event served as a powerful reminder that the Knysna community continues to rally behind those affected by cancer, ensuring that no one has to face the journey alone.
