KNYSNA NEWS - Criminal activity seemed to be less robust in Knysna than in Plett over the Christmas period but police were nevertheless kept on their toes.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, the closing down of drug outlets continued throughout the festive season.
"Eden Cluster Crime Combatting and Rural Flying Squad conducted focused operations where they arrested six suspects, two for dealing in drugs and four for possession of drugs in Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Conville and Kwanokuthula," he said.
"These forces confiscated 39 'bankies' Tik, 32 Mandrax tablets and 14 Tik straws." Police and various other local and provincial law enforcement agencies also carried out joint road safety operations between 23 and 26 December.
The operations were conducted at entry and exit routes into the Western Cape and its surroundings, with a specific focus on the N2 highway between George and Knysna. During the aforementioned time frame, the operations resulted in the arrest of 15 motorists for driving motor vehicles whilst under the influence of liquor.
A total of 559 vehicles were searched and fines for traffic related offences to the value of R51 400 issued at roadblocks.
Alleged murder
On Saturday 18 December, Knysna police arrested a 53-year-old suspect in connection with the death of a 37-year-old man. According to Spies, investigations indicate that the men had an argument when the victim was stabbed with a knife.
"The victim sustained a stab wound to the chest. He was declared dead by paramedics on scene," he explained. The suspect was arrested shortly thereafter.
Mugging
On Friday 17 December, members of the Knysna police Crime Prevention Unit acted on information about a mugging on Waterfront Drive, Knysna. According to Spies, information at the time indicated that a man armed with a firearm had mugged a 54-year-old victim making off with a cellphone and other belongings.
"Information on the whereabouts of the suspect took police to the Knysna Taxi Rank, where a suspect was taken into custody," he said. The police searched the man and found an air pistol as well as the stolen items in his possession.
The items were confiscated and the 36-year-old was arrested.
