KNYSNA NEWS - Founding member of Knysna Networking, Gudrun Cox, marked a major milestone as she celebrated her 90th birthday last Wednesday at a special breakfast held in her honour at the Knysna Yacht Club.
The event was attended by business associates and members of the local networking community, who gathered to recognise Cox's longstanding contribution to business relations in the area.
Life of resilience
Reflecting on her life, Cox described many of the challenges she faced as deeply personal. She credited her ability to overcome them to the unwavering support of family and friends, as well as an inner strength and positive outlook. "I always believed every cloud has a silver lining," she said.
Fond childhood memories
She shared fond memories of her childhood, having grown up on a farm where life was marked by freedom and a strong sense of community.
Annual family holidays to the Kruger National Park and her first glimpse of the sea at the age of 10 remain among her most treasured experiences.
Music also played a central role in her upbringing, with visits from performers such as opera singers, the Drakensberg Boys Choir and even Pagel's Circus.
Changing world view
She noted that changes in the modern world have often left her surprised, frustrated or even helpless, particularly in the face of global conflict and suffering. "It's not the world I knew, but there is no ideal world," she reflected.
Values that endure
Amid all of this, Cox remains grounded in the values that have guided her life. She describes family and friendship as her greatest assets, while her philosophy of happiness centres on kindness, generosity, politeness and faith.
Staying active in mind and spirit
Although she no longer participates in sport, once a favourite pastime, Cox keeps her mind active with weekly crossword puzzles. She also emphasised the importance of planning, positivity and enjoying each day.
Message to younger generation
Her message to younger generations is uplifting: "Be positive, be happy, laugh daily and live life to the fullest."
Enduring inspiration
Those in attendance described Cox as an enduring inspiration, whose legacy continues to shape the local business community she helped build.
