Update
KNYSNA NEWS - Following complaints from residents across greater Knysna about the poor condition of the Knysna Waste Transfer Station and concerns over waste piling up, Knysna Municipality has moved to reassure the public that the facility has been fully rehabilitated and is now operating normally.
In recent weeks, community members raised alarms about hygiene risks and environmental concerns linked to the condition of the station.
The municipality acknowledged the challenges and confirmed that urgent remedial action was taken to restore the facility to acceptable operational standards.
As reported on Knysna-Plett Herald last week, an unusual and major mechanical breakdown of the conveyor system a few weeks ago resulted in lengthy and time-consuming repairs.
During this period, waste could not be processed as usual, leading to the temporary dumping of refuse outside the station and the visible accumulation of garbage that sparked public concern.
Employees further explained that deteriorating and ageing infrastructure has become a significant challenge in maintaining the operational reliability of the conveyor and compressor systems.
According to the municipality, all required rehabilitation work has now been completed, with waste piles cleared and the site stabilised to ensure safe, orderly and sustainable operations going forward.
Director of Community Services, Johnny Douglas, praised municipal staff for their efforts during what he described as a particularly demanding period.
"The manner in which the team rose to the challenge is truly commendable," said Douglas. "Across both administration and operations, their dedication and resilience have delivered outstanding results."
Douglas added that the successful turnaround reflects the municipality’s commitment to hygiene, efficiency and sound environmental management, particularly in essential public services such as waste handling.
The municipality also extended its appreciation to municipal employees, partners and community members who contributed to the recovery of the facility.
"This collective effort shows what can be achieved when we work together," Douglas said.
Knysna Municipality reaffirmed that the Waste Transfer Station is now fully operational and will continue to be closely monitored to prevent a recurrence of the issues raised by residents.
Officials encouraged the public to continue reporting service delivery concerns through the appropriate municipal channels.
