KNYSNA NEWS AND VIDEO - Thousands of car fanatics flocked to Simola hill in Knysna today for the start of the King of the Hill shootout, and braved soaring temperatures on and off the track to watch some world class racing.
84 drivers, separated into different classifications, entertained the cheering crowds with their screaming engines and fast paced attack on the 1.9km Simola track.
André Bezuidenhout in his Nicholson McLaren NME-engine Gould GR55 dominated most of the practice sessions and the first qualifier of the day, mostly with sub-40 second times.
Following him closely were Stuart White, Wilhelm Baard, Franco Di Matteo and Dawie Joubert, as well as Franco Scribante and Martin van Zummeren who were nipping at their heels - all within mere split seconds from each other.
Tomorrow, Sunday 6 May, four more qualifying rounds will be run, leading to the class finals, various shootouts and the crowning of the ultimate King of the Hill.
Shootouts will cover the Road and Supercar, Single Seater and Sports Car, and Modified Saloon Car, classes. Prize giving is scheduled to start at around 16:40 if all goes to plan.
