Update
PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The interim leadership at Greenwood Bay College (GBC) is working "collaboratively" to address "key issues and take decisive action" following the resignation of headmaster Marc Falconer.
'Uncertainty, frustration'
In an announcement, on 12 February, the interim leadership, consisting of the GBC leadership, ADvTECH and the GBC Parent Forum NPC (Parents' Association), said it was addressing concerns and the way forward for GBC.
"The resignation of Marc Falconer, along with broader challenges related to leadership, academic performance, communication, and infrastructure, has understandably led to uncertainty and frustration within our school community," said the interim leadership.
WhatsApp group
The announcement follows a move by some parents of students in support of Falconer; starting a WhatsApp group and conducting a survey on the issues facing GBC.
The interim leadership confirmed that Falconer will be departing from GBC at the end of Term 1 (end of March).
'Collective focus'
"While we recognise the respect and support he has received from many parents, our collective focus must now shift to securing the right leadership to guide GBC into the future," it said.
It said a structured response and improvement plan is being implemented, focusing on the following key areas:
- Leadership and stability;
- Enhanced communication and transparency;
- Academic performance and strategic direction;
- Student and staff wellbeing and support;
- Infrastructure and facilities development;
- Sports and extracurricular activities;
- Administrative efficiency; and
- Rebuilding GBC's unity and reputation.
"To support these focus areas, dedicated portfolios will be established, comprising school leadership, staff, parents, and ADvTECH representatives with expertise and an interest in these portfolios," it said.
'Decisive action'
"Our commitment to you (stakeholders): we are committed to taking decisive action, maintaining open communication, and working collaboratively to address concerns and implement meaningful improvements.
"Our goal is to ensure GBC's long-term success for the benefit of our students, families, and educators."
The interim leadership said "further communication will follow in the coming week to provide greater clarity on the next steps".
