PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Yet another fire swept through an informal settlement in Plettenberg Bay at the weekend, leaving more than 35 residents displaced.
This comes after two fires ripped through the Qolweni and Kurland communities last weekend, gutting about 24 homes and leaving 50 homeless. The Qolweni fire also claimed the lives of two residents.
The most recent fire broke out in Bossiesgif at about 21:30 on Sunday evening, 8 August. According to the Bitou Municipality's communication team, the fire destroyed 24 homes and left 35 displaced. The Bitou fire department responded and managed to bring the blaze under control. No fatalities were reported.
The affected residents are being temporarily housed in the local community hall, known as the Bicycle Shed. "The cause of the fire is still unclear and is being investigated," the team said in a statement.
Humanitarian relief is being provided to victims by the municipality as well as local community support organisations.
