KNYSNA NEWS - News of an elderly woman being attacked by dogs in bushes near Concordia, Knysna and subsequently dying of her injuries recently came to the attention of the Knysna-Plett Herald (KPH).
Boniswa Zwayena of KPH overheard the conversation between funeral goers on Saturday, July 15 while attending a different funeral that happened to take place in the same graveyard where 55-year-old Nonzwakazi Matiwane was being laid to rest.
As it was a funeral, it was not the time or place to ask too many questions, and thus information confirming the incident was difficult to come by.
On Tuesday, July 25 though, Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed the incident.
According to Spies, an inquest docket was opened following the death of the 55-year-old woman at the George Provincial Hospital on Friday, June 30.
"Investigation into this matter indicates that the woman was collecting wood in the bushes near Concordia on June 29 when she was bitten by dogs. She sustained multiple injuries and was transported to a hospital in Knysna by ambulance.
The victim was transferred to George where she later died and a postmortem to determine the cause of death was conducted," said Spies.
He added that the investigation into the matter is at an advanced stage.
At the time of going to print, KPH had not yet succeeded in finding Matiwane's family.
