KNYSNA NEWS - It was a great moment when the newly built Concordia Primary School was officially opened on Tuesday 3 June.
Due to unforeseen delays, the school had to keep its dream alive for many years.
The school hall was packed and the learners' school uniforms were a sea of blue in the new hall. The learners sat quietly, flanked by their teachers, savouring the moment.
The ribbon was cut by the Eden and Central Karoo District Director for Education, Jewel Jonkers, and school principal Marthinus Opperman. Entertainment was provided by the school choir and learners performing a dance.
Remembering the lost ones
At the start of the programme there was a moment of silence for some learners and staff members who passed away recently, soon before the move to the new premises.
Videos and photos of them were displayed in remembrance and some young ones could not hold back the tears.
New beginnings
The school moved to its new premises in March this year. "Today, we have gathered here to celebrate a remarkable transformation and a journey from humble beginnings to a beacon of hope and opportunity.
"Our school, which was once housed in a modest prefabricated structure, has risen like the phoenix from the dust, embodying resilience and the unwavering spirit of our community," Jonkers said.
"To our learners: Within these walls, you will embark on journeys of discovery, creativity and innovation. Embrace the opportunities that come your way, for they are the stepping stones to your dreams."
Educators and staff were reminded that their role was to guide the young minds and that their passion and commitment will be an inspiration for the future generation.
Working together
"To the parents and community members, your support is invaluable," Jonkers said. "Together, we will build a nurturing environment that fosters growth, inclusivity, and excellence. Let us celebrate this new beginning with hope and determination. May this school be a place where possibilities are endless, and dreams become reality."
Special moment
Opperman said it was a privilege and an honour to share the special moment with them and to be part of the big common dream that has become a reality.
"They say that a school should have certain qualities to be successful. Concordia also has qualities that make us stronger and unique."
Municipality welcomes school opening
Knysna Mayor Thando Matika also spoke at the event. "We know that there have been lots of challenges when the school construction started. We're here to support the municipality. We welcome the opening of the school," he said.
The state-of-the-art facility offers everything that learners and staff could desire. Every class has been fitted with a television. They have beautiful playgrounds with swings and other playing material, and the grounds boast artificial turf.
