KNYSNA NEWS - In solidarity with cancer sufferers the Rotary Club of Knysna and the Rotary Anns organised the annual Shavathon campaign, made up of three events, the first of which was held at the Knysna Waterfront on Saturday 22 February.
'Initiative with a difference'
The Waterfront was abuzz with people who came to have their hair sprayed all the colours of the rainbow; others came to have their hair cut or to be clean shaven, all willing to support this "initiative with a difference" by spending small amounts such as R50 or more for adults or R25 for children under 12.
Others again, not as daring, were willing to show support by donating financially.
The Shavathon, one of South Africa's best-loved fundraisers, was started in 2003 in Gqeberha, by a group of friends to show support for a local cancer patient.
Small beginnings
From these small beginnings it has grown into one of the most popular fundraising events on the South Africa calendar. Schools, community organisations and workplaces join in the fun.
"Fearless Hair to Show You Care" is the theme for this year's campaign, reminding us of the courage cancer survivors demonstrate on their journey. The Rotary Club of Knysna supports CANSA's drive to keep hope in sight through education, research and advocacy.
All made possible through fundraising events such as the Shavathon.
Next events
The next event will be held at the Salt and Petal, on 1 March from 9:30-12:30, just for spraying and donations.
And then the final event will be at the Knysna Mall on 8 March from 9:30-13:30. You can be daring by having your hair coloured or cut, or shaved off.
Donations
Should you not be able to attend either of the two events but wish to donate, please see the contact details below, and help Rotary reach its target of R30 000.
