PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou firefighters made their hometown proud when they participated in the national Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) event in Cape Town last week.
Not only did they return with several awards, including for the most improved team in the competition, but one in particular stood out as it highlights the true spirit of a firefighter.
Calvin Mabombo, one of the seven Bitou firemen who competed, was honoured with an award for showing “brotherhood” during the competition after he compromised his own competition to help a struggling opponent over an obstacle.
The competition took place at the Roeland Street fire station from 10 to 12 August and was based on international TFA competitions. The event is recognised as one of the most difficult firefighter competitions in the world and is a fitness challenge specifically for firefighters.
The Plett team consisted of Adriaan Swanepoel, Dazelle Marais, Faizel Ruiters, Bongani Yawa, Mabombo, Greswhin-Lane due Plessis and Lindi Zithu.
“It was a wonderful experience, but they don’t call it tough for no reason. It truly was a test of our abilities,” said Swanepoel, adding that one stage included a 22-storey climb in full kit and breathing apparatus.
Crossfit Plett helped the team get fitter, more confident and ready for the challenge.
“We appreciate the help a lot," said Swanepoel. "We also want to thank everyone who helped us get to Cape Town to participate," he added, referring to the Plett community banding together to cover accommodation and travel costs, among others.
