SEDGEFIELD NEWS - A false alarm at a local residence ended up with a suspect being arrested for possession of stolen items recently.
According to Fidelity ADT's Garden Route branch manager Pieter Meiring, one of their officers, Buyile Zweni, was dispatched to investigate an alarm signal at an address in Dover Street at 17:00 on Sunday, 4 August.
"He arrived at the address and found no sign of anything amiss, but decided to do some random patrols in the area just to be on the safe side," Meiring said.
It was then that Zweni noticed an unidentified man coming out of a home that was under construction at the time. The man's pockets appeared to be bulging with unknown items.
"This raised our officer's suspicion and he decided to stop and question the suspect. On further inspection, it was discovered that his pockets were filled with copper pipes and taps which were later confirmed to have been stolen from the home under construction," said Meiring.
Police were called to the scene and the suspect was taken into custody on a charge of theft. Another bag filled with items also allegedly stolen from the house was found in his possession. "I want to pay tribute to officer Zweni. Earlier this year in July, he also helped prevent a fire from destroying the iconic Cloud 9 ridge. He is a real asset to our team and to the Sedgefield community," said Meiring.
