PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The man who allegedly raped a 12-year-old Plettenberg Bay girl during a sleepover at his home in Qolweni about a week ago has been arrested.
Police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said this week that a 29-year-old suspect, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, had handed himself over to police on September 22 after a "relentless investigation by the George Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS)".
"He was subsequently arrested and charged with rape. He made his first court appearance in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court the next day," Pojie said.
The case was postponed to October 7 for a formal bail application and the suspect was remanded in custody.
Pojie earlier said according to information received, the young victim and friends had visited the home of the suspect where they consumed alcohol from about 16:00 on Saturday, September 19.
At some point during the evening the group decided to walk home. "But, along the way they met a friend of the victim's mother who threatened to tell her parents where she was."
The girl then decided to return to the suspect's home where she slept that evening and woke up the next day with blood-stained underwear.
Pojie said that the suspect allegedly touched the young girl and penetrated her with his fingers while she was there.
The girl reported the incident to her parents who informed the Plett Police about what had allegedly happened. The George FSC unit took over the investigation.
