KNYSNA NEWS – On Wednesday 5 April, Michael Sears, who together with Stan Trollip form the acclaimed book-writing duo Michael Stanley, hosted a book launch at Bargain Books Knysna to mark the release of their most recent novel, A Deadly Covenant. Book enthusiasts were invited to an exclusive event where they could meet the author and learn about the experiences that served as the basis for his most recent book.
A Deadly Covenant is the second prequel to the series and flashes back to Detective Kubu's early career with the Botswana CID.
The book is set in the evocative Okavango delta in northern Botswana.
The thriller sees the beloved character Kubu on a journey to solve a mystery of an old Bushman's skeleton that is discovered by a backhoe operator while digging a trench for a new water project.
The investigation is handled by Kubu and Scottish pathologist Ian MacGregor, but things quickly spiral out of control. The investigative duo finds eight more remains, hinting at a larger murder mystery at play.
The socio-political difficulties resulting from the African diaspora are a recurring topic in Michael Stanley's writings. Moreover, it delves deeply into significant traditional African mythology and explores African indigenous culture's role in the lives of these characters.
Michael and Stanley are former academics who have had positions in both business and academia. Geological remote sensing is Sears' area of expertise as a mathematician.
Trollip is an educational psychologist with a focus on using computers in teaching and learning, as well as a pilot.
Their technical expertise and academic curiosity has helped the two to write some of the most compelling thrillers in South African literature. The duo have travelled extensively on air safaris to Botswana and Zimbabwe, during which the idea of a book set in Botswana was born.
