KNYSNA NEWS – Each year, Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws) publishes a calendar as part of its fund-raising efforts, and 2022's calendar is now available for purchase.
The printing of the calendar is largely funded by the entry fees paid to enter a photograph - or many photographs - of pets into a photo competition, and by the generosity of local businesses that sponsor the calendar's pages.
The popularity of the calendar competition has gained momentum with each passing year.
Despite many distractions brought on by the Covid pandemic, this year's competition attracted over 300 entries, giving the judges the unenviable task of whittling down the number to just 25 winners - two for each month and one for the cover.
The response to the competition was particularly gratifying, as it shows that, as Kaws celebrates its 70th birthday, support for animal welfare is stronger than ever.
For the all-important cover, Brian Sowden and Jenny Stephenson's Rottweiler, Frank, was the undisputed winner. Frank's joyful gait and happy expression, shown against a backdrop of the muted colours of Knysna's lagoon, stole the hearts of the judges.
The calendar's pages are a feast for the eye, from welfare dogs and purebreds to contemplative cats and other pets. With the competition open to all pets, apart from dogs and cats, entries were received of horses, pigs, birds, and even a cow. A collage of entries fills the back and inside-back cover.
This year, Kaws has increased the print run to ensure that everyone who wants a copy - or 10 - is able to find stock. Despite inflation and increased printing costs, the selling price remains R100, making the calendar the ideal gift for all animal lovers - a gift with a heart.
The calendar is available at various outlets in Knysna, Sedgefield, Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay, including the Kaws Shop in Market Street and the Kaws kennels in Marlin Street, Hunter's Home.
A list of stockists is posted on the Kaws Facebook page (where there is also an album of all the entries) and on the Kaws website. Phone Kaws on 044 384 1603.
