KNYSNA NEWS - A local match assistant, Hilali Bam (14), is one of the youngest assistant referees (AR) in the Safa Eden Hollywoodbets Regional League.
Born in Knysna, he is currently doing Grade 8 at Percy Mdala High School. Knysna Plett Herald chatted with the talented youngster to get to know him better.
A heart for the game
Early in 2022, Bam started wielding the flag as assistant referee. His eagerness was so evident that he was promoted as Safa Eden Hollywoodbets Regional League match official in 2023.
Bam aims to rise to the professional ranks and officiate in the DSTV Premier Soccer League. While trying not to neglect his school career, he wants to become a referee in top-flight football as soon as possible, as a sport career nowadays is one of the shortest careers.
He was inspired by his older brother, Junior Mpumulo, who stands behind him, motivating him towards becoming a top match official.
The art of refereeing
When asked for advice for other aspiring young referees, he said match officials not only have to be very fit, but importantly, must know all the rules of the game.
One also needs to be fair to contribute to the smooth flow of the game. It is important to improve at every game, as it helps to build confidence.
Being a referee is not an easy job. Respect on and off the field is of utmost importance. One must stay grounded and be able to face any challenges on the field of play, including the attitude of some football supporters who shout at you when they don't agree with your decisions.
It is important to be able to ignore these criticisms and focus on your duties as match referee.
And last but not least, you must enjoy the game!
