GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality's (GRDM) disaster management centre, in collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Local Government Disaster Management and Fire and Rescue Services, Bitou and Kannaland local municipalities have installed 1 700 smoke detection devices in high fire-risk informal settlements.
In the first phase of the project, that concluded at the end of March 2022, approximately 1 400 smoke alarms were installed in the Qolweni/Bossiegif area of the Bitou Local Municipality.
The Kannaland local municipal area was the site of the second phase of the project, that was completed within three months, from 20 December 2022 to 20 February 2023.
Approximately 300 devices were installed in the informal areas of Calitzdorp, Van Wyksdorp, Zoar and Ladismith.
