KNYSNA NEWS - The designated garden refuse site on Old Toll Road, Upper Old Place in Knysna has become a growing source of alarm for nearby residents, who say years of illegal dumping, uncontrolled fires and environmental pollution now pose a serious threat to public safety, health and the environment.
Residents report that what was meant to be a regulated garden waste facility has effectively turned into an unmanaged dumping ground.
With no apparent control at the gate, illegal dumping occurs daily along Old Toll Road leading to the official dumpsite. Discarded waste reportedly includes household rubbish such as plastics, nappies and other refuse, dumped dangerously close to residential buildings. The dumping is so extensive that it is clearly visible from the N2, yet residents say it continues unchecked.
Of particular concern are the frequent fires breaking out at the site, at times requiring the fire department to respond almost daily. Residents fear these small but persistent fires could escalate into a major disaster, especially under drought conditions and ongoing water constraints.
Many have drawn parallels to the devas-tating 2017 Knysna fires, questioning whether lessons were truly learned.
"This is becoming a serious health and environmental crisis for Knysna," said one resident, referencing multiple complaints and emails sent to authorities over the years, including correspondence dated 5 and 12 August 2025. "Do we really need another disaster before action is taken?"
Adding to the concern are allegations that raw sewage has been flowing from the dumpsite into the Knysna Lagoon for years. Residents insist this issue has been repeatedly reported, with no visible action, accountability or urgency from the municipality.
Community members warn that hazardous smoke, polluted water, and the risk of fires spreading to nearby homes and indigenous forests threaten not only residents, but also Knysna's tourism-driven economy.
"This is not just mismanagement, it's neglect," residents say. "We deserve transparency and immediate action before irreversible damage is done."
At the time of publication, the municipality had not responded to requests for comment.
