KNYSNA NEWS - Famsa Knysna has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) and help the community recognise the emotional warning signs of harmful relationships.
Understanding the impact of relationships
"Relationships shape our lives. Some uplift us, while others leave us feeling distressed," said Karin du Plessis, Famsa Knysna director.
"Many relationships are easy to leave, but others are complicated by marriage, children, finances, or other ties. This campaign asks a simple question: How do we reach people who may not realise that an emotionally or physically violent relationship is not normal?"
Posters that speak to everyone
The campaign features striking posters designed to speak to everyone, whether literate or not.
A large, shadowed figure represents the emotional darkness created by hurtful relationships, which can overwhelm wellbeing and affect children living in these environments.
In contrast, a small lighthouse beam symbolises hope - the moment someone realises there is a safe place to go, a listening ear, and a professional counsellor ready to help.
Thanks to Rotary funding and Daisy Business Solutions, that covered the printing cost, 400 posters are being distributed across Knysna and Sedgefield by Veronica Hetjies, Famsa's community awareness staff member.
Message
Each poster carries the message "If a relationship makes you feel…" with emojis showing sadness, anger, overwhelmedness, pain and despair, along with Famsa's contact details and a QR code linking to a confidential counselling form.
Distribution began on 12 November, with posters appearing in taxis, malls, public toilets and other high-visibility spaces.
"We hope these posters remind people of the importance of healthy relationships. No one should endure a relationship that harms their mental, emotional, or physical wellbeing," Du Plessis said.
"If a relationship is making you feel bad and affecting your sense of self, reach out. Help is available." Community members are encouraged to spot the posters and share their locations on Famsa's Facebook page.
