KNYSNA NEWS - The Pick n Pay Fish Braai Competition has become an institution at the Knysna Oyster Festival, showcasing the best of Knysna’s culinary talent.
This year’s winners and title of King of the Fish Braai went to Team Kolstert members Roland Rhode and Mack Morape, at the competition’s new venue at Woodmill Lane shopping centre.
Rhode is a former winner of the Green Chefs Knysna community cooking competition and his passion for seafood was evident.
The judges drooled over his lightly smoked yellowtail accompanied by grilled mushroom filled with bacon and root vegetables.
The winners were…
1. Team Kolstert: Roland Rhode and Mack Morape; 2. Team Trouter Space: Sheldon and Joshua Du Plessis; 3. Team Utash-Shisonyama: Melvin Mene and Tembelani Mbude; and 4. Pansy Cooks: Stacey Fredericks and David Jorette.
Journalists Nwabisa Pondoyi and Maxwell Jantjies were at Woodmill Lane for the occasion and spoke to a few locals and this is what they had to say:
Celeste and Evan Marais with Leyonce de Bruin and Man-Lynn October, showing you are never too young or old to soak up the Oyster Festival experience: “It’s our first time here. I’m here to support my colleague and I brought the little ones with me for a bit of an outing.”
Celeste Brown and Johan de Bruin. "We have been living in Knysna for 24 years. Just to clear things up, he’s Afrikaans and I’m English, so I took the name Brown instead of De Bruin when we got married. We miss the old arrangement of the festival where everything took place in the same venue, it sort of lost its spark when they separated the events. We also miss the oyster eating competition.”
Zongamele Rasi: “While I was walking past, I saw the people in the area and it made me curious to find out what’s going on. It all looks so interesting; I’m looking forward to the tasting part later.”
Colleen Spence: “It’s my first time here and I just came out to support my colleague, as we are both from the Foschini group.”
Use for print: Thembinkosi Boyisi: “I was just walking past until I got captured by the music. I then caught a whiff of the aroma and I just had to come have a look. I’ve never been to one before.”
