KNYSNA NEWS - A school for children with special needs in George recently held a fundraising event to help create a home for adults with Down syndrome and autism, but they didn’t forget that there is a needy school in Knysna that would benefit from some assistance too.
Up with Downs, a school that caters to the needs of children with learning disabilities as mentioned above, introduced an adult programme in 2011, but according to director Janet Seegmuller their dream is to create a home for adults.
“We want to create a home for these young people where they can live within a safe, loving and protected environment for the rest of their lives. A home that will accommodate young adults from the entire Southern Cape,” she said.
And to this effect a breakfast fundraiser was held at Knysna Primary School hall on 2 September.

According to Seegmuller, a contribution from the funds raised will go to the Sivuyela informal school for deaf and illiterate children in Hornlee, which was founded by Collina Muleka and her husband Andile Tafeni.
The funds were raised by selling tickets or a table before the event, which was sold out weeks in advance, and well-known Knysna auctioneer Nico Louw was on hand to ensure that the highest bids were put in for items on auction.
According to Louw, also the event organiser, the day was a great success and he thanked all the sponsors involved.
"Without these sponsors this event would not have been able to take place," adding that almost R40 000 was raised, but that the amount still needed to be confirmed. Part of this, as mentioned, will be used to buy Sivuyela the items they need the most.
Louw said the children were absolutely amazing. "It was very special being able to bring some happiness into the hearts of these wonderful children."
He also made special mention of his team members Lisanne Ruben, Jan and Andri Fouché, and Tony Borrett, saying that without them the event would not have been such a success.
