PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A 19-year-old hiker had to be assisted on the Robberg Nature Reserve hiking trail on Tuesday 24 December after his hand was trapped under a rock.
Plettenberg Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station commander, Marc Rodgers said they were alerted to the incident just after 12:30 and immediately launched a sea rescue craft to assist.
Upon the NSRI crew’s arrival they found the young man’s right hand had already been freed by a friend.
“The teenager was medically treated and secured to a Stokes basket stretcher and hiked to the shoreline where our floating stretcher was used to float the young man through the surf to our sea rescue craft,” Rodgers said.
“In a stable condition he was brought to our NSRI rescue base aboard the sea rescue craft and family transported him to hospital for further medical treatment.
"On Wednesday we received news that the teenager was discharged from hospital and he is making a good recovery.”
