KNYSNA NEWS FLASH - Edgar Matthews (85) who shot himself at the Knysna Provincial Hospital on Monday July 25, did not have an appointment or evident reason to be there that particular day.
This was said in a statement on Thursday, July 28, following the death of Matthews from Plettenberg Bay, who died after he shot himself in the mouth in the hospital’s parking lot.
In a statement from Nadia Ferreira, the principal communications officer for the Eden and Central Karoo districts, she said Matthews did not have an appointment at the hospital that day.
“During the afternoon of 25 July at approximately 13:30 a man, a known patient, took his life at the entrance of the Knysna Hospital building. Emergency staff, doctors and nurses rushed to the scene, attempted to resuscitate the patient and rushed him to the emergency room where he died.”
Ferreira said it must be noted, “according to the hospital records this patient did not have an appointment at the hospital on that particular day, nor had he seen any medical staff ad hoc on that day prior to the incident.”
She also confirmed, “several of the patients and staff who witnessed the incident have received counselling as this was a traumatic experience for all.”
“The Department wishes to convey the sensitivity of this issue pertaining to the family’s privacy and passes on its condolences during this trying time.”
