KNYSNA NEWS - During a special Heritage gathering this weekend, Knysna’s Ward 4 received training equipment worth more than R200 000 to aid the 14 sports teams in the ward, including rugby, soccer, netball and boxing.
The ward, which has been dubbed “the home of sports and political legends”, consists of White Location, Flenter, Rhobololo, Greenfields, eQolweni, Bloemfontein, eThembeni and Happy Rest.
During the celebrations on 23 September at Chris Nissen Primary School, ward councillor Velila Waxa said, “Each ward is given R400 000 yearly and I thought it best to invest in our children through sport and help keep them off the streets and away from mischief.”
Going forward, he said, he is now planning to take 5% from his monthly salary and put it in an education trust that will benefit the children from the ward.
A proud product of the ward, Thabo September, who is a retired football defender, having played for SuperSport United, was also there to encourage the youth.
David Faas, a boxing promoter said, "Children who are actively engaged in sports can be role models to their peers from school and the neighbourhood.

"I am sure this contribution of sports equipment to all sporting codes by the councillor will go a long way. This was service delivery in the true sense."
