KNYSNA NEWS - Tina Turner's famous lyrics rang true as the Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching (Kilt) held its annual excellence awards to celebrate the achievements and contributions of trailblazing educators from the Knysna area.
The event was held at Simola Hotel on Saturday 29 July.
"Kilt's mission is to strengthen the whole school system, to support the enablement of school principals and their teams to transform their schools into centres of excellence," says Kilt managing director, Sandy Ueckerman.
"To ultimately ensure that over time these schools become schools of choice for parents and to make sure that each child, regardless of race, gender and financial resources, has a solid education foundation."
Kilt chairperson Gill Marcus delivering an inspirational address to the dedicated educators in the audience.
These educators won the award for the following categories:
- The E-Learning Commitment Award: Constance Stuurman, principal of Fraaisig Primary
- The Embracing Literacy Award: Edgar Adams - principal of Redlands Primary
- The After-school study club awards: Lekhono Mdolo - Percy Mdala High
- High School Sports Participation Award: Noshipo Magadla - Percy Mdala High
- Primary School Sports Participation Award: O' Neal Nanko - Concordia Primary
The Overall Afternoon Programme Participation Award:
- Nzoku Tshaka - Percy Mdala High
Caring for the Community award:
- Michael Kleynhans - principal of Hornlee Primary
The Growing Families award:
- Carol Paulse - Sunridge Primary
Leadership in action award:
- Thinus Opperman - principal of Concordia Primary
Teacher of the Year Award:
- Devika Naik - Fraaisig

The 2023 Kilt Excellence Awards also mark the start of the Kilt Participation Point system and the launch of leader boards at various schools to track and award participation of schools in Kilt-led programmes.
