KNYSNA NEWS - A six-year-old girl, believed to have been raped, has had Knysna detectives following up every conceivable lead since her story was brought to their attention last Wednesday, November 26.
The little girl is said by community members to have made her 'appearance' out of the forest, after she had allegedly disappeared either during a similar time frame as the missing nine-year-old Liyema Baleni, or with Baleni.
According to the six-year-old she was with the older girl when they were both in the forest. Asked how she/ they had managed to survive on her/ their own for so long, she replied that she/ they had eaten "dirty things".
Knysna police communication officer, Sergeant Chris Spies says that everything the girl says does not match and that a case of rape is being investigated by the Family, Child and Sexual Offences Unit in George. The child will also be evaluated by a psychologist to help determine whether she has any information which may lead to finding the still missing Baleni.
"The allegation regarding the link between the disappearance of Liyema Baleni was followed-up," said Spies who confirmed that the six-year-old was accompanied back to the bush by detectives to where the alleged incident took place. "A police biological and blood dog was used to help search for any clues or tracks, but no traces of anything could be found." This investigation is still ongoing. Baleni went missing from Bongani township in Knysna on August 28.
