KNYSNA NEWS - Last month, a senior police branch manager at the Knysna police station (pictured) was allegedly found running a money-laundering business within the Knysna police station and allegedly being in possession of SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) grant cards.
It was reported this week in the Knysna-Plett Herald the internal investigation into a senior Knysna police branch commander, who could be facing corruption charges, has been dropped and no case has been opened yet.
However earlier today, August 19, after seeing the story published online Southern Cape police communications officer, Captain Macolm Pojie said the investigation had not been dropped. “The investigation is complete and full processes will be followed in terms of disciplinary action.”
Last month, the officer in question was allegedly found running a money-laundering business within the Knysna police station and allegedly being in possession of SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) grant cards.
At the time, Pojie said: "The allegations are regarded as very serious and for this reason we've opened an inquiry for further investigation by our provincial detective unit.
"Parallel with this investigation, we have instituted an internal disciplinary investigation, which is conducted by the Eden Cluster office in George," continued Pojie. "The allegation of Sassa cards that are in possession of the said officer cannot be confirmed, as there is no evidence at this stage that suggest or support this."
The captain continued to say that, as such, no criminal case had been registered but that, should evidence come to the fore as the investigation unfolds that conform to the elements of a crime, a criminal case could follow.
Pojie also said, "The mentioned officer was served with a letter regarding the intention to transfer him to George pending further investigation, but he has used the opportunity to make a representation as to why he should remain in Knysna."
After the story was published on July 14 it caused a stir on the Knysna-Plett Herald's Facebook page.
Duncan Gohl made a sarcastic comment, saying, “More good news from our small ‘dorp’.”
JD Janse van Rensberg said the officer in question must be made an example of.
A clearly pleased Vivianne Facchetti said, “Expose, expose expose…”
Another comment was made on the newspaper's official website by a person who only identified himself as IOnlyC.
The comment read, “Further proof that the asylum is being run by the inmates. SAPS is truly becoming an organised crime unit and these people undertook to 'serve and protect'. What a joke.”
