KNYSNA NEWS - Recently SANParks in Knysna hosted a number of local Grade 11 girls from schools throughout the town for a job shadowing experience with a difference.
According to Ndumi Mgwenya, People & Conservation Officer for SANParks, the Park sent out invitations to schools around Knysna and Plettenberg Bay for girls in Grade 11 to write essays on the subject ‘SANParks as their employer of choice and their specific fields of interest’.
Thirty essays were selected from four high schools namely Knysna Secondary in Hornlee, Concordia High in Concordia, Percy Mdala in Khayalethu and Murray High School in Kwa-Nokuthula.

The girls with the winning essays won a day in the Park where they had staff from Finance, Conservation, Tourism, Scientific Services, People & Conservation and Communications departments make presentations on what their work entails, what courses they studied and what subjects they had to do in high school to qualify to do those courses.
After the presentations the girls went and shadowed staff to get a feel of what the workplace entails. At the end of the day they came together to share with others what they learnt in their various fields.
Their day ended shortly after lunch, when the communications manager Nandi Mgwadlamba and Ranger Adrian Carelse handed over certificates and gift packs. The gift packs consisted of toiletries bought by SANParks staff from their own pockets as a token of appreciation for the girls who took part in the competition.
