KNYSNA NEWS - It has become more evident that many bacteria, especially foodborne diseases, come to life as a result of poor hygiene practices in kitchens.
To this effect, on Friday 11 May, an environmental health practitioner of Eden District Municipality (Eden DM), Mendy Tyhawana who is employed at the Knysna office, facilitated a health and hygiene training session at Tapas & Oysters restaurant in Knysna.
Twelve kitchen staff members together with the kitchen manager Owen October attended the session.
“As environmental health practitioners, we need to make sure that all staff members employed at food premises are aware of the importance of good hygiene practices, as the health of customers is in the hands of those staff," Tyhawana emphasised. “Your job as food handlers is important – take pride in what you are doing,” she said.
The topics covered, revolved around food poisoning – what it is, how you get it, signs and symptoms, and prevention.
The five keys to prevention are: cleanliness; separating raw and cooked foods; cooking thoroughly; keeping food at a safe temperature; and using safe water and raw materials.
More sessions will be conducted by Eden DM throughout the rest of the year to ensure the health and safety of residents.
