PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - With the Plett Ocean Festival in full swing, the Sky Villa Boutique Hotel is celebrating the ocean through art at its new art gallery for the duration of the festival.
"With Sky Villa's focus always having been about working within the community, we're excited to be part of Plett Tourism's Ocean Festival," said Paul Duverge, managing director of Raw Africa Boutique Collection (formerly Cape Summer Villas Boutique Collection).
"Six months ago we opened The Gallery @ Sky and we've had art shows and a monthly art event ever since, and now, for the Ocean Festival, Michele Bestbier, director of Art Source Africa and the gallery curator, has created [an exhibition called] 'Celebration of our Oceans via Art'."
The programme offers a variety of art-related events including three art workshops, two art events and interesting talks.
One of these, "An Ocean Odyssey", is a children's art adventure in painting which took visitors on a journey into a story about meeting mermaids, monsters and an underwater magician. This was facilitated by Manya Marais last Friday and Saturday and catered for children aged between five and 12 years. "Storytelling sparks your child's imagination, teaching them to envision and visualise," Marais said.
"Drawing teaches your child to observe, translate and make their mark. Painting tuition is about learning to mix colours, make intuitive decisions and express boldly.
"Composition introduces planning. Design introduces inventive practical thinking and holographic perspective - syncing left and right hemispheres of the brain."
Another item on the programme is Art Source Africa's creative drawing workshops for adults. Named "Heart by the Sea", the three-day programme will be filled with discussion and demonstration, led by John Moore who plans on sharing unique creative art techniques. He will explore the mediums of charcoal, pastel, pencil, pen and ink. He says that drawing is the foundation for all art-making, and will be discussing tools and techniques to help artists improve in the drawing process. The programme started on Wednesday 6 July and will continue today and tomorrow, 7 and 8 July.
Another item on the programme is Art Source Africa's "The Way of Water" workshop led by Bestbier. She will explore six art mediums from a brand-new and essential perspective, as well as unique creative techniques of expression. This started on Monday 4 July and will also take place on Saturday 9 July.
Bestbier will also host a presentation "The Secret Life of Water" tonight, Thursday 7 July.
