KNYSNA NEWS - On 5 August, 38-year-old Michelle Claasen was fatally stabbed in Bongani. The perpetrator is alleged to be a family friend.
The incident occurred at the home of another family friend.
At approximately 17:20 on Saturday 5 August, the nine-year-old daughter of Cheryldene Bushela, Michelle's sister, told her the horrifying news.
Racing to the location, Cheryldene discovered her sister-in-law, the victim, seated but lifeless. It was evident that she had passed away as no pulse could be detected.
According to eyewitness testimonies, the family had gathered, as they often did, to share drinks and spend time together.
The individual alleged to be responsible for the stabbing arrived at the scene accompanied by his girlfriend. It was reported that the perpetrator was displaying aggressive and derogatory behaviour. He then left the premises momentarily, only to return brandishing a knife.
The suspect directed his aggression towards Michelle as she intervened, asking him to cease his violent behaviour. He responded by swiftly stabbing her in the upper left side of her body before discarding the knife and fleeing the scene. The witnesses confirm that the attack occurred without any prior altercation or provocation, catching Michelle completely off guard.
Allegedly, police arrived on the scene two hours after the incident took place. Knysna Police gathered witness statements and proceeded to look for the person responsible. It was later heard that he handed himself over to the police on Sunday 6 August.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies confirmed that a murder docket has been opened.
"A 39-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the murder," he said. "The suspect already made his first court appearance [on 8 August] and was remanded in custody. He was scheduled to appear for a formal bail application on Wednesday 16 August*. Investigation into this matter is at an advanced stage. The investigation continues."
*The outcome of Wednesday's court appearance was not available at the time of going to print.
