On Saturday, August 30, the Cake Committee had its mid-year meeting at RiverDeck Country Accommodation's 'Old School' facility in Buffel's Bay. Bakers took along cakes of their choice "just for the fun of it".
Ann Southey of the Cake Committee explained that the 'committee' originated purely from people's enjoyment of baking and eating cake. "There is no prescribed rules and regulations about cake or how to bake it. Anybody can join. Just bake a cake of your choice and bring it," said Southey.
The Cake Committee was inspired about three years ago thanks to a notion and concept from local floral designer, JP Ferreira. "The committee is really just about fun. We ask for donations from the bakers and sell tickets to the public who want to join us in enjoying the cakes," Southey explained.
Money raised at the Cake Committee's three annual gatherings is donated to a worthy cause such as Soul Buddies After-Care in Concordia, Knysna. At the cake days, tea is served from exquisite cups collected by members. "I have forgotten how delightful it is to drink out of a bone china cup," said a Cake Committee participant.
The next cake day is planned for November. While a date has not yet been determined, interested parties are welcome to contact Southey at thecakecommitte@gmail.com.
