KNYSNA NEWS - Ernest Nqoko, fondly known to locals as Smiley, is one of the most entertaining, but also experienced traffic controllers in town, and he is now back in his spot at George Rex Drive – just in time to manage the busy holiday traffic.
This year has, however, presented an extra challenge since he was knocked over by a driver and sustained injuries to his leg.
Smiley has been a pointsman (traffic controller) in Knysna for 10 years, and is usually stationed at the George Rex Drive intersection with the N2.
His accident happened on 19 October and although he was not seriously injured, this last incident brings the total number of times he has been hit by a car to three.
During an interview with Knysna-Plett Herald after the incident the then shaken Smiley said, “I love my job which I've been doing for a decade – that's how much I love it – but such incidents change you.
"Sometimes when I stand there the memories of all three incidents come rushing back, all at once."
Most recently he said his leg has healed completely and that he has dealt with the trauma.
“I am excited to back, welcoming visitors to our beautiful town and entertaining locals.
"I am just hoping that all drivers can comply with the rules of the road and cooperate to avoid such accidents from happening again.”
A case of reckless driving was opened following the incident.
Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said the investigation is still ongoing.
