The youth was swimming with his two cousins at Platbank Beach, Sedgefield when they were swept out to sea by a strong riptide. Although the two cousins managed to swim ashore unharmed, the 17-year-old boy disappeared under the water.
The NSRI, Sedgefield Fire and Rescue Services, SA Police Services, WC Government Health EMS and the Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue helicopter responded to a call for assistance. Sadly, after not having any success, the search was handed over to the Southern Cape Police Diving Unit.
“The search for the boy is continuing. His body is still missing and police divers are still busy with the search,” said Provincial Police liaison, Captain Malcolm Pojie.
