4 November declared a public holiday for South Africa’s local elections

ELECTION NEWS - Election Day will be a public holiday across South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed, as millions of registered voters prepare to choose local representatives for the next term of municipal government.

The Presidency announced the declaration on Tuesday night, saying Ramaphosa had acted in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act of 1994.

A day to vote

The public holiday is intended to give South Africans an opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote without the usual pressures of a working day.

The President has called on registered voters to use the day to participate in the election and have a say in who represents their communities at local government level.

Local government is particularly significant for residents because municipalities are responsible for services and functions that directly affect daily life, including areas such as water, sanitation, roads, waste management and electricity distribution.

You cannot simply vote anywhere

For anyone planning to travel around Election Day, there is an important detail to remember: voters can only cast their ballots at the polling station in the ward where they are registered.

The Presidency has specifically warned that voters who travel will not be able to transfer their votes to a polling station in another ward.

That makes it worth checking your voter registration details and polling station before Election Day, particularly if you expect to be away from home on 4 November.

Employers urged to make provision for voters

The President has also called on employers to make provision for employees to exercise their constitutional right to vote on Election Day.

With 4 November falling on a Wednesday, the public holiday means voters will not have to fit their trip to the polls around a normal working day.

The declaration follows the President’s earlier announcement that the 2026 Local Government Elections would take place on 4 November.
