GARDEN ROUTE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - The 40 player, community-based Southern Cape Carpe Musicam! Orchestra is shaking its feathers for its May concert Rock, Pop and Romance, to be held in George and Sedgefield.
Performances are scheduled at George Methodist Church on 14 and 15 May (19:00) and at Sedgefield NGK on 30 May (15:30).
The opening number splices together movements from Mozart's "Linz" Symphony and his Symphony no. 40 in a pop idiom. Haydn Seek is a collection of nursery rhyme melodies in the style of Haydn. A group of very young children will be joining the orchestra on a collection of recorders and violins, complete with a wood-block solo.
The music of ABBA, The Beatles, Queen and The Rolling Stones are next in line, interspersed with quieter items like the stunning Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso for solo violin and orchestra.
Soloists Cherith Bain (violin), Anneke van Wyk (clarinet) and Elsabe Barkhuizen (piano) add some extra magic to the lively programme.
Covid protocols will be the order of the day. "This means that nobody can sit right in front of you to block your view, and that you can sit far enough away from your neighbour to not hear him humming along, or feel him tapping his foot," said conductor Norman Carless.
The Carpe Musicam! Quintet (violin, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone and keyboard) will give its performance of Passion to Pente-cost (Pase tot Pinkster) on Saturday 8 May at 19:00 at the Dias Maritime Museum in Mossel Bay. The performance portrays the story of Jesus in words and music from Palm Sunday through to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Tickets cost R120 and are available online at www.carpemusicam.co.za.
