GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - There is absolutely no experience on earth quite like hearing music performed live by real musicians on acoustic instruments.
The combination of people - blowing into variously shaped tubes, tickling strings and banging on strangely shaped appliances - which we call an orchestra, is still one of humankind's most glorious achievements.
Harmony is ever paramount; there is no room for dissension - all strive to do their bit to realise a common goal that is somehow greater than its constituent parts.
That music which we call "classical" or "serious" has usually been written to be performed live in front of a breathing audience.
But what of movie music?
Most of us are so wrapped up in the action of a film that we are hardly aware of the splendid music playing in the background, setting the emotional tone for the action. This music - by far the greatest volume of orchestral music created in the 20th and 21st centuries - is designed to be recorded onto a sound track - and so very rarely gets to "see the light of day", as it were.
Carpe Musicam! Orchestra - a jewel in the Garden Route's cultural crown - will be performing a broad selection of music written especially for films in its Movie Delights concerts to be held this month in George, Sedgefield and at Laminin Agora Celebration Venue near Hartenbos.
John Williams, who turned 90 in February this year, is probably the greatest living composer of film music and a short symphonic suite based on music from ET and Star Wars will be the major work on the programme.
Other composers represented in this glittering array of the best of the best film music are Nino Rota (The Godfather - with mandolin trio), Eric Coates (The Dambusters March),
Henry Mancini and Francis Lai (Love Story).
Music by 11-time Grammy Award winner Linda Ronstadt and Oscar-winner Rachel Portman will be in the mix.
There will only be three performances:
- 10 June at George Dutch Reformed Mother Church hall - 19:00;
- 12 June at Sedgefield Dutch Reformed Church hall 15:30; and
- 19 June at Laminin Agora Celebration Venue - 15:30.
