KNYSNA NEWS - The critically acclaimed dance-drama Karatara is currently being staged at the newly refurbished Barney Simon Theatre in The Market Theatre from 9 to 23 November.
Based on the tragedy of the fires that killed nine members of the Karatara community in 2018, the production explores themes of loss, community, social injustice, and media power.
Karatara won the Best Debut Production award at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in 2022 and has since enjoyed successful runs at Woordfees, the Baxter Theatre, and even a short run in Knysna.
Its artistic brilliance has been acknowledged with a Fiesta award for Best Design, two Fleur du Cap awards for Best Lighting and Sound Design, and the Woordfees Award for Best Dance Production. Karatara's producer, Marie Vogts, expresses gratitude for the opportunities it has had and sees the award as a means to propel the work further.
