KNYSNA NEWS - Young Stefan Steyn (15) looks set to be the next swimming prodigy to emerge from the Knysna Aquatics swimming pool after he earned five medals and a new provincial record at the SA Short Course Championships last weekend.
Steyn took to the pool in Pietermaritzburg between 15 and 19 September, where he competed against the very best swimmers in the age group 15 and under that country could muster.
He was a man on a mission and attained his clutch of medals with a masterful performance.
Steyn is a strong freestyle swimmer and showed his class in the discipline. He first swam in the 800m freestyle, which he finished in a time of 8:39.45, enough to earn him a bronze medal.
Next up was the 200m freestyle and a top perfor-mance here earned him his first gold medal at the championships with a time of 1:55.19. The individual medley event followed, but he was unable to medal here and finished fourth.
His best swim came shortly thereafter, though, as he took on stiff competition in the 100m freestyle. But Steyn outdid them all, touching the wall in a time of 52.94, which not only handed him gold in his age group for the event, but also a new Western Cape record.
Last up was the gruelling 1 500m freestyle swim where a strong effort meant he finished in a time of 16:31.00, giving him his fifth and final medal of the championships with a third place.
