KNYSNA NEWS - Sunridge Primary School's table tennis team made an impressive debut at the South African Table Tennis Board (SATTB) National Tournament held in Cape Town from 1 to 7 October.
The team's participation in the tournament marked a significant milestone for the school, which introduced its table tennis programme just last year.
Led by coaches David McCarthy and Llewelyn van Rooyen, the team performed so well that they were selected for the Eden Team to compete at national level.
The team, consisting of five players – Dalzanty Pedro, Jae-Leigh Hoffman, Irisha Pedro, Neshay Saaiers and Deveigon Williams – participated in mixed doubles and single events.
"At first we didn't expect to get as far as Eden. This is the first-ever table tennis team at our school, and we are proud of them as their coaches for making it this far," said Van Rooyen.
A highlight of the championship was when team member Jay-Leigh Hoffman made the top 16 category and became the first Eden player who obtained this achievement in his first national competition. Jay-Leigh also obtained an extra ranking point.
Sunridge Primary School extends its gratitude to the following educators for their support in enabling the team to attend the national tournament: principal Iris Louw, coaches David McCarthy and Llewelyn van Rooyen, Crystal Puren, Sasley Puren and Maryam Smith.
