PLETTENBERG BAY CYCLING NEWS - The Sabrina Love Challenge (SLC), held annually in Plettenberg Bay, was a record-breaking event for the Sabrina Love Foundation, with more than 1 000 participants taking part in the allotted seven-day period from 25 to 31 December.
It was the 17th such challenge.
The SLC was first held in 2003, and 2020 presented a unique challenge in that, much like other races, it was forced to go virtual.
Organisers also had to scrap the famed beach activities in favour of five unique MTB and trail runs at the stunning Kurland Estate just outside Plettenberg Bay. Participants had to time themselves, using tracker apps, and had to complete their run or cycle within the seven allotted days.
While it was certainly a shake-up for the event, Sabrina Love co-founder and chairman Tony Lubner was over the moon about how everything played out.
"The majority of people enjoyed the 'chilled' atmosphere of being able to start the routes at a time when it suited them and were able to immerse themselves in nature, something often missed at events that have a designated start time for everyone," he said.
He also indicated that it could "certainly be a format for the future". Organisers hope to include the beach activities again at this year's event.

The SLC plays a major role in fundraising efforts for the organisation every year. "It is fundamental to our fundraising efforts as not only do the event entries help start our year off with necessary funds to operate, but also the database of participants becomes part of our 'Sabrina family' and typically continues to help contribute throughout the year," Lubner explained.
With donations included, R250 000 was raised through the 2020 Sabrina Love Challenge.
