KNYSNA NEWS - The Pakamisa Boxing Club from Knysna won six gold medals at the Eden Boxing Championships, held this past Sunday, 11 August, at the Safe Hub Sport Facility in White Location, Knysna.
Seven clubs from the coast slugged it out at the event, including the Ikhaya Boxing Club (Mossel Bay), Masibulele Boxing Club (Mossel Bay), Garden Route Boxing Academy (Mossel Bay), Sobuza Boxing Academy (George), Somqoba Boxing Academy (Plettenberg Bay) and the Masiphakame Boxing Club (Knysna).
In total 70 boxers, boys and girls ranging in age from 12 to 16, were in action in front of a big and knowledgeable crowd.
The championships were hosted in collaboration with the Knysna municipality.
Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa, Cheslyn Goldberg (acting sport director of Knysna municipality), Mbuyisile Dukwane (Western Cape champion), Mannfred Lutter (German amateur boxing coach) and Nqubela Gwazela (former WBO International champion) were among esteemed guests at the event.
Nkosikho Makalima, chairman of Eden Boxing, praised the municipality for its role in the event.
'Overwhelming support'
"The municipality has once again given overwhelming support to the most ignored sport in the province. Thanks to the mayor and Goldberg for giving these young talents a great opportunity to showcase their talent," Makalima said.
The Western Cape Boxing Championships will now be held in Cape Town on 24 and 25 August.

Siphokuhle Mntu (Masibulele Boxing Club) and Imange Thethani (Garden Route Boxing Academy) were named the best boxers in the boys' and girls' Junior Category.
In the Cadet Category for boys and girls, it was Junior Mbuthuma (Garden Route Boxing Academy) and Onako Bukuva (Pakamisa Boxing Club) who excelled.
