KNYSNA NEWS - The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League was launched by Spur Steak Ranches and Amarider in 2009 as an initiative to provide regional and national structure for the sport at school level. It also aims to stimulate event planning in the many regions where the sport is not active at school level.
The league is about introducing more learners to bikes and encouraging SA schools to adopt mountain biking as an official sport. With these simple aims the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League has built a strong cross-country racing format, with four events taking place in each province between May and September.
The venue for the Knysna leg of the league #2 has moved after the June 7 fires. According to Southern Cape regional event organiser, Juan Botes, the race was scheduled to kick-off at The Farm, off Old Cape Road in Knysna on Saturday, July 29, but will now take place at the Klipheuwel MTB trail park at Klein Brak River.
Botes says the new track is “completely” different to The Farm’s, which was largely forest-like with pine trees. The track at Klein Brak comprises mainly fynbos and natural water wetlands, and more than 80% of the trail is visible to spectators.
“The second venue is as magnificent as the first and when kids come out on race day they will have as much fun. Parents should please come out to join as well, the trail is exposed, so it’s very easy to see your child race and cheer him/her on,” he says.
The Spur Schools MTB League aims to promote MTB as an in-school sport, encourage mass participation among schoolgoing children and grow the sport across the country by extending the reach of races every year.
