KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Forest Marathon once again lived up to its reputation as one of South Africa's most scenic and iconic races as thousands of athletes from across the country descended on the picturesque town for the annual event.
The Forest Marathon is one of the highlights of the Knysna Oyster Festival and traditionally opens the sporting programme for the festival's jam-packed line-up of events.
A total of 6 570 athletes entered the half-marathon (21km), while 1 220 runners took on the full marathon (42km).
As expected, Nedbank Running Club's Lloyd Bosman showed his class by winning the half-marathon in a blistering 1:05:08.2.
His teammate, Bruce Maboza, finished second in 1:08:52.7, nearly four minutes behind the winner. Earlier this year, Bosman finished seventh overall in the Comrades Marathon.
Carina Swiegers of Boxer Athletics Club claimed the women's half-marathon title in 1:17:57.1, recording the 12th fastest time overall.
The marathon was won by Selwyn Matthews, also representing Nedbank Running Club, in 2:37:17.7.
Tholinhlanhla Shabalala of Knysna Marathon Club produced an impressive performance to finish second in 2:40:00.3, while Lindani Ngwenya of Plettenberg Bay Athletics Club completed the podium in 2:47:42.4.
In the women's marathon, Leigh Callaghan of Achilles Amateur Athletics Club crossed the finish line first in 3:06:25.6, the 14th fastest time overall.
